What Are the Differences Between Laser and Phenol Peels?

Both modalities have pros and cons. Laser skin resurfacing burns the skin, using thermal energy with precision technology that targets imperfections while leaving the skin around them intact for faster healing and repair. Healing takes 7-10 days. Although healing is quicker, a second or third session may be necessary depending on the depth of the lines and wrinkles. Laser skin resurfacing is an office procedure.

Phenol peels, the gold standard, use acid to burn the skin. Recovery takes two weeks. The procedure will last a lifetime, and no other resurfacing will be needed. Dr. Dabbah does his phenol peels in the operating room under sedation. Both exfoliate the skin and promote collagen growth giving you gorgeous skin that radiates.

How Do I Choose Which Modality I Want?

During the consultation, Dr. Dabbah will review both options. He will consider your overall health, skin quality, and texture. He will explain which modality will achieve what you want.

What Can I Expect From a Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment?

Dr. Dabbah usually prescribes a medication to allow you to relax. We require that you have someone drive you to and from the procedure. When you arrive for your treatment, we will apply a topical numbing cream that takes effect in 15 minutes.

Dr. Dabbah will apply a gel to your skin and begin running the device over the targeted areas. During your session, you may experience some mild stinging, followed by a warm sensation. Our laser is well tolerated by most patients. If you’re particularly sensitive, we can provide some added cooling with a fan to keep you more comfortable. The treatment times vary depending on the concerns you are addressing, but most appointments take 30 to 45 minutes.

"Dr. Dabbah and his staff are a wealth of information. I never feel rushed or concerned that the information and medical care is of the best I can obtain. They are polite and extremely helpful. I know I am in great care with him and his staff. I highly recommend Dr. Dabbah."

What Can I Expect From a Phenol Peel Procedure?

Dr. Dabbah performs phenol peels as an outpatient in a surgery center. You will be asked to refrain from eating and drinking for 8 hours prior as you will be sedated for the procedure.

Once sedated, Dr. Dabbah will apply the phenol to your face. When you are in the recovery room, you will feel burning, that will continue for about 8 hours. Dr. Dabbah will prescribe medication to help you recover. Swelling and recovery are longer than with laser resurfacing.

Caring for Your Skin After a Resurfacing Treatment

For the first three days, you may experience some mild redness and swelling. These are relieved with cold compresses. During recovery, you must keep your skin well hydrated so as not to allow your skin to get dry. You will wash your face and apply moisturizer or Aquaphor to keep your skin hydrated. We will encourage you to drink plenty of water. You must stay out of the sun until you are healed. Your skin will flake or peel over the recovery period, revealing your brighter complexion.

As with any surgical or non-surgical procedure, strictly following the post-procedural instructions provided to you is vital to ensuring the best results. If any questions or concerns arise during your recovery, do not hesitate to reach out to Dr. Dabbah for further instructions.
