What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure in which breast implants are used to enhance the size, shape, and contour of the breasts. The procedure involves the insertion of silicone or saline implants into the breast tissue, either under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle, through incisions made in inconspicuous areas such as the breast crease or the areola.

The goal of breast augmentation is to improve the appearance of the breasts and to create a more balanced and proportionate figure. The procedure is used to enhance small breasts. Breast augmentation in Boca Raton is  also used to restore breast volume that may have been lost due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging. It also addresses the patient who wants greater symmetry.

It is important to note that breast augmentation is a highly individualized procedure. The best results are achieved when the patient and surgeon work together to create a treatment plan that addresses the patient’s specific goals and concerns.

Who are the Ideal Candidates for Boca Raton
Breast Augmentation?

What are the Types of Breast Implants?

Several types of breast implants are available to patients considering breast augmentation surgery. The two main categories of breast implants are saline and silicone. Saline breast implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, while silicone breast implants are filled with a cohesive gel. Within these two categories, there are several variations, each with unique characteristics and benefits.

Saline breast implants come in a variety of shapes, including round and teardrop, and can be filled to varying degrees of firmness. Saline implants are fitted then filled in the operating room which gives the plastic surgeon a bit of flexibility especially with asymmetric patients.

Silicone breast implants are known for their natural feel and appearance and are a popular choice among patients. Another type of silicone implant is the gummy bear implant, a form-stable implant made of a thicker silicone gel that holds its shape and doesn’t ripple as much as traditional silicone implants. Silicone breast implants are available in both round and teardrop shapes and are also available in a variety of firmness levels.

Patients considering breast augmentation are encouraged to consult with Dr. Dabbah to discuss the various options and determine the most suitable implant type.

Breast Augmentation Incision Options

The three most common incision locations are the periareolar, inframammary, and transaxillary.

Periareolar incision:  The periareolar incision is made around the perimeter of the areola, the darker pigmented area surrounding the nipple. This approach allows for precise control of the implant placement and minimal scarring and is typically used for smaller breast augmentation or when performing a breast lift and augmentation simultaneously.

Inframammary incision: The inframammary incision is made in the crease beneath the breast and is the most common incision location. This approach provides Dr. Dabbah with ample visibility and control of the implant placement, and the incision is typically well-concealed within the natural breast crease.

Transaxillary incision: The transaxillary incision is made in the armpit, and the implant is placed through the incision and into the breast pocket. This approach allows for the implant to be placed without any incision on the breast itself and is typically used for patients who prefer minimal scarring. However, this approach may have less control over the precise implant placement and is not as commonly used as the other two options.

FAQ

Breast Augmentation in Boca Raton

Breast implants come in a variety of shapes, numerous sizes, and various profiles, depending on the company. A detailed examination and consultation helps determine the appropriate implant for the patient. Each patient comes in with her own reasons for breast augmentation, and it is up to the plastic surgeon to determine what that is. I look at the patient’s history with implants, age, and health history. I ask what she wants and what lifestyle she lives. This information, along with the measurements taken, helps determine the appropriate implants.

There must be a thorough and honest discussion with the plastic surgeon. As there is no standard to cup size, this discussion, along with the patient’s height, body shape, measurements, and verbal communication as to what she wants, will help achieve her goal.

The answer depends on the patient. Silicone, by nature, is the most natural feeling and, more often than not, looks the most natural. But a patient with sufficient breast tissue may get away with a very natural look using saline. During the consultation, each option will be discussed as it pertains to the patient.

The answer is based on the individual and her particular anatomy.

If your breasts droop, you may need a breast lift with breast augmentation. Measurements taken during your consultation will help make that determination.

Most patients wear a post-surgical bra. The kind is determined by the exact procedure performed.

Recovery varies based on numerous factors. For example, Is this the first augmentation or a replacement augmentation? The age of the patient and pain tolerance also play a factor. We ask that the patient keep her arms below her shoulders for at least two weeks. Exercising and sports may resume in approximately six weeks.

Most patients can go to work approximately two weeks following surgery.

Most breast augmentation surgeries do not require drains.

Most breast augmentation surgery is done with internal absorbable sutures.

Tightness after surgery is common and, in primary augmentations, expected. There are movements we advise against for at least two weeks, such as raising your arms above your shoulders. We will review the restrictions during your preop consultation and postop visit.

The Keller Funnel allows the surgeon to place the silicone implant through a smaller surgical incision with less trauma. It is essential that the surgeon uses the “no touch” technique, and the Keller funnel allows for that. Using a Keller funnel is associated with less risk of infection.

The “no touch” technique describes the placement of a breast implant by touching it. It goes straight from its sterile package into the Kennel Funnel and into the breast pocket. It is most used to place silicone implants during breast surgery.

Some patients may require extra support if their tissues are weak and if there is a concern about maintaining the position of the implant.

I perform breast augmentation under general anesthesia in an outpatient surgery center.

Having someone stay with you or be available for you during the first few days of surgery is always helpful.

You can and should continue with mammograms.

Every effort is made to preserve nipple sensation. It is an uncommon risk but can occur with large breast augmentations.

Breast implants are not designed to last forever. A patient should go into this surgery knowing that there could be additional surgeries. It could be because of a deflation of the implant or because of capsular contracture. It could be because the patient wants to go bigger or smaller or simply wants the implants removed.

Capsular contracture is a known complication in breast implant surgery. Scar tissue is expected, and will form around your breast implant. If the scar tissue remains soft, you will not develop capsular contracture. If the scar tissue hardens, it may make your breasts feel firmer and possibly distort their appearance.

Incisions are carefully place and sutured to minimize scarring. There will be scars, but they will fade with time.

Breast implants can rupture. If a saline implant ruptures, your breast will become noticeably smaller, and you will be aware of it. Silicone implants can rupture without you detecting that it has occurred. Sometimes mammograms will detect ruptures, but additional testing such as MRIs and ultrasound will help. There are specific recommendations regarding monitoring implants for rupture that your plastic surgeon will discuss with you.
